Smiling mature woman after bone grafting and dental implant treatment

Bone Grafting

Dental implants are the best treatment for missing teeth. However, not everyone is an immediate candidate. The jawbone loses density after tooth loss, but a bone graft from Dr. John W. Starr can restore lost tissue and improve implant candidacy. Visit Golden Triangle Periodontal Center in Columbus and Starkville, MS, for expert treatment that will get you smiling again.

What Is a Bone Graft?

Bone grafting is a surgery to address bone loss in the lower jaw. It's most commonly performed for patients who would not otherwise qualify for dental implants, which combine with dental restorations to replace missing teeth.

When you lose a tooth, the underlying jawbone quickly begins to atrophy from a lack of stimulation that was provided by the tooth roots. At a certain point, the jaw will become too weak to support dental implants. A graft replaces lost tissue and promotes new bone growth to create a solid base for dental implants to anchor in.

The sinus lift procedure is very similar to a bone graft. The main difference is that it's performed on the upper jaw rather than the lower jaw. The surgeon gently lifts the maxillary sinus to create space within the jaw for the grafting material.

Dr. Starr offers both of these preparatory surgeries to Starkville and Columbus patients. We also offer three types of dental sedation, so you won't have to worry about any discomfort during your surgery.

Skip Preparatory Bone Grafting With the All-on-4 Method

All-on-4 implant denture

If you're considering an implant denture, ask Dr. Starr about the All-on-4® technique. It's a modern implant placement method that uses just four implants to support a full denture. The two implants at the back of the jaw are angled to make the most contact with the existing bone tissue, so many patients can skip grafting, even if they have low bone density.

Will Insurance Cover Bone Grafting?

If your graft is considered medically necessary, your insurance may provide partial coverage, although not all plans do. Our team in Columbus and Starkville can help you verify your coverage before we schedule your procedure.

We want your treatment to be affordable regardless of your insurance status, so we also accept financing through CareCredit® and offer in-house financing plans with no interest for patients who can complete payments within a pre-determined time period.
